Coronavirus stimulus checks sent to dead people should be mailed back to IRS, Treasury says
The address the money should be returned to depends on the state you live in. Those addresses can be found on the IRS website.
If the payment was a paper check:
- Write "Void" in the endorsement section on the back of the check.
- Write “2020EIP Returned / Taxpayer Deceased” on the front of the check
- Mail the voided Treasury check immediately to the appropriate IRS location below.
If the payment was a paper check and you have cashed it, or if the payment was a direct deposit:
- Submit a personal check, money order, etc., immediately to the appropriate IRS location listed below.
- Make payable to “U.S. Treasury” and write on the check “2020EIP Returned / Taxpayer Deceased” and the social security number or individual taxpayer identification number of the check recipient.
